Booklist Review

Gr. 2-4. Children are encouraged to explore the diverse plants and animals "that live at the beach, in the tidepools, on the reef, and in the ocean surrounding Hawaii" in this photo essay coauthored by an early childhood specialist and a marine biologist. The exceptional, full-color underwater photographs and a generally clear, well-organized text combine to convey a great deal of information about such intriguing creatures as spaghetti worms, ghost crabs, sea cucumbers, and triggerfish. Hawaiian names for many of these marine dwellers are included. The importance of safety in the water, as well as respect for the environment, is emphasized. While an oversize format would have better served this material, youngsters hooked by the cover shot of a snorkeling boy holding an octopus are likely to clamor for the opportunity to become ocean-world investigators. No index. --Julie Corsaro
