Summary

Summary

An exquisitely lovely collection of Dalton's work with high-speed (and still) photography over twenty-five years. Most photos are full-page in excellent color. Aside from the detailed captions, the text is largely given to Dalton's developing techniques and his lament for the destruction of the habitats of his subjects. Booklist Review

The brilliant British photographer, whose most recent book among many was The Secret Life of a Forest [BKL Mr 1 87], presents a 25-year chronological retrospective of his work. He introduces it with a personal account of how he became first a naturalist and then a photographer, as well as highlights of his subsequent career. He accompanies each photo with a note on what it shows, other facts about the creature it depicts, and often, special techniques used to achieve it. Reproduction of both black-and-white and color images is gorgeous; the layout varies image size intelligently while orienting all to the top of the page; and the only cavil to make is that the tight binding frustrates the excellent matching in across-the-gutter displays. An exceptionally distinguished gallery of wildlife photography. --Ray Olson
