Booklist Review

The sequel to Double Exposure (Delacorte, 1966) features the same format as the original: photographs of major celebrities, all taken by McDowell, coupled with commentary by other major celebrities. Here the photograph-commentary pairings include, among 116 others, Tom Cruise by Paul Newman; Fred Astaire by Mikhail Baryshnikov; John Huston by Katharine Hepburn; Bette Midler by Laurence Olivier; and Frank Sinatra by Beverly Sills. McDowall, himself an actor, is a sympathetic photographer; his portraits are by turns gritty and glossy, but never unflattering. Curiously, it is the celebrity commentaries more than the photographs that make this book so delightful. Actors all, some of the commentators show that they can be hams both in print and in the movies. But a surprising number of them display considerable wit, writing ability, and heartfelt emotion. For instance, James Woods' paean to James Garner is so obviously genuine that it'll bring tears to your eyes. Index. --Steve Weingartner
