Booklist Review

This charming cookbook contains recipes for classic, homestyle desserts, including apple pie, custards, ice cream, and angelfood cake. Although most recipes hail from the Midwest, many other regions of the country are represented. Moore writes her instructions clearly, dividing each recipe into sections headed by the ingredients needed for each segment. Easy to follow and not difficult to prepare, these selections stem from a less-complicated cooking tradition--having been derived from the author's mother's and grandmother's collections. They are designed for the average kitchen, and few unusual ingredients are called for. In all, this is a well-designed, broad-based dessert cookbook, suitable for all but the absolute novice. It should prove popular in large public libraries. Bibliography; to be indexed. --Jill Sidoti

Library Journal Review

Good old-fashioned desserts from the author of The Wooden Spoon Bread Book ( LJ 8/87). Some of these recipes are from old cookbooks, some from the author's childhood, others from treasured family collections. Moore also includes a clear, authoritative introduction on ingredients and techniques. Both cooks who grew up with these desserts and those who are discovering them for the first time will appreciate Moore's latest book. (c) Copyright 2010.
