Booklist Review

Fleischman argues that psychotherapy and the religious quest of the individual are intertwined. He describes 10 elements of religious psychology that he says are present in the practice of psychotherapy: witnessed significance, lawful order, affirming acceptance, calling, membership, release, world view, human love, sacrifice, and meaningful death. Each element, Fleischman suggests, is both psychological and religious. Taken together, they form "the active, complex, compound of religion." His discussion encompasses an analysis of these themes for clinicians, with the aim of creating "a matrix of understanding and action" to deal with the religious phenomena that arise in therapy. Recommended for larger collections. Notes; to be indexed. --Sheila McGinn-Moorer
