In 1895 Governor Morton appointed a state historian, whose duties were "To collect ... edit, and prepare for publication all official records ... and data, relative to the colonial wars, war of the revolution, war of 1812, Mexican war, and war of the rebellion [etc.] The 2d and 3d annual reports are lettered on cover: Colonial series. Vol. I-II. They contain as appendices papers relating to the part taken by military organizations of the state during the civil war, colonial records, 1664-1675, and muster rolls, 1664-1775. "Appendix N" of the 3d annual report was issued separately, 1899-1904, as v. 1-7 of the "Public papers of George Clinton, first governor of New York, 1777-1795, 1801-1804", issued in 10 vols., New York, 1899-1914.

"No reports have been issued by the state historian since 1904, though subsequent publications have the running title 'Annual report of the state historian'."
