Choice Review

In this work, Thomson and Meador have combined eye-catching photographs with a detailed historical commentary to tell the story of northwest Louisiana's largest city. Thomson, who researched and wrote the text, explains how the book grew out of the photographic collections of the archives at Louisiana State University-Shreveport. Meador, director of the archives and of its photographic copying program, secured the best possible prints for the book and wrote the bibliography. Although most of the pictures came from the LSUS Archives, a few were obtained by Meador from other sources. The 188 photographs used are all in black and white. There are views of such subjects as steamboats, buggies, family groups, oil rigs, WPA activities, and Barksdale Air Field. Overall, this is a fascinating photographic album with a thoroughly absorbing text. An invaluable source for anyone interested in northwest Louisiana. All levels.-J. Jackson, Southeastern Louisiana University
