Summary:
An original watercolor by the American illustrator Warren Chappell. The painting is one of eight that appears in Mr. Chappell's 1944 edition of "Hansel and Gretel : a story of the forest" by the Brothers Grimm, music by Engelbert Humperdinck, published by Alfred A. Knopf. The watercolor shows the starving parents of Hansel and Gretel deciding in despair to abandon their children in the middle of the forest.
