Summary

As a baby, Jake Cutler was separated from his family and left on the planet Remota, deep in the seventh solar system. Eleven years later and Jake isn't like other boys-he has purple eyes and carries a secret within himself that could change the entire universe.

When Remota is attacked by ruthless space pirates on the hunt for Jake, he manages to escape. But now he's on the run with a bounty hunter and the suspicious-looking crew of a spaceship called the Dark Horse . Forced to contend with zero-gravity, shipwrecks, black holes, and countless enemies, Jake must discover the truth about his past before he is hunted down and caught.

This action-packed first book in a planned trilogy is full of aliens, space monsters, gadgets, battleships, and one boy's search for his destiny.

Booklist Review

A lad with a shadowy past falls in with a crew of cutlass-wielding, skull-helmeted space pirates in this fun interstellar yarn. A sudden attack on the techno-monks who took him in as a very young child sends purple-eyed preteen Jake Cutler fleeing from planet Remota aboard a rickety space scow crewed by the renowned if rather ragged Space Dogs: We put the fear in stratosphere. Along with rescuing a kidnapped rich girl and a stranded young alien from a distant galaxy, Jake and his motley allies escape from a mob at a mafia-owned spaceport, battle a giant space squid, almost fall into a black hole, defeat a much larger warship, and go on to discover the fabled, fabulously wealthy hidden planet Altus and it turns out that Jake is the long-lost heir. Following these breakneck adventures, it's no wonder that Jake's choice between a career in politics and blasting off with his buccaneer buddies turns out to be a no-brainer. At least two sequels are in the works. Pulptastic . . . or, as Jake puts it (repeatedly), Magnifty --Peters, John Copyright 2010 Booklist

School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-7-Pirates, space travel, orphans, and monsters are all part of the futuristic world of young Jake Cutler. Jake has never known his family or his home; he was brought to live with the cyber monks on Remota when he was just an infant. His origins are a mystery, though some have suggested that he comes from the planet Altus, which some people are certain is made of fine gems and circled by moons of pure crystal and which many others believe exists only in legend. When pirates attack Remota, he escapes on a cargo ship with an Altus-seeking bounty hunter, only to find that he has really taken refuge on a pirate ship with an odd and interesting crew. As Jake flees from the evil Interstellar Navy and tries to find his way to Altus, he encounters space villains, spaceship-eating monsters, aliens, and black holes on his adventures through many solar systems. Mike Grady voices each character with much enthusiasm and with clearly recognizable voices, which draw listeners into the exciting tale. While the plot may be familiar to science fiction fans, Jake's personality and his interactions with the wide cast of eccentric characters are amusing, and he learns not to judge people by their job titles or first impressions. VERDICT Fast action, a likable cast, and the combination of space travel and pirates may lure reluctant readers/listeners to begin this trilogy.-Mary Ann Karre, formerly of the Binghamton City School District, NY © Copyright 2016.
