Booklist Review

Abrams expands the relatively inexpensive Masters of Art series with ``concise'' versions of three entries in its higher-ticket Library of Great Painters set: Cezanne (1962,) Seurat (1968), and Vermeer (1981). All feature illustrated biographical essays concentrating on the subject's artistic context and development, followed by very generously annotated portfolios of full-page plates. There are 40 colorplates in each, and the Cezanne includes 8 black-and- white plates. The reproductions are sharp and the colors in them rich and realistic, probably-- considering improvements in color printing during the last quarter century-- more so than those of the more opulent progenitor-volumes' plates. The Seurat volume includes a biographical outline and selected bibliography; the Vermeer has notes. No indexes. RO.
