Booklist Review

High stakes and heart-pounding action continue in this satisfying sequel to Sanctum (2012). Tough, determined Lela Santos, now returned to earth, is charged with the mission of eliminating soul-stealing Mazikin who seeped out of the dark crevices of the afterlife. In a reversal of roles, Lela is named captain, with Malachi as her lieutenant. When the Mazikin threaten friends, family, and loved ones, Lela's emotions, loyalty, and leadership are tested at every turn. The on-target narrative deftly balances her street-sharpened edginess with her blossoming self-respect while she embraces a newfound acceptance by her classmates, as well as an awakening sexuality.--Fredriksen, Jeanne E. School Library Journal Review

Grades 10 Up-In this second installment (Skyscape, 2013) of the "Guards of the Shadowlands" series, Lela and Malachi are thrust back into the land of the living to protect Earth from the Mazikin, demon creatures who take over the bodies of the living. Once captured by a Mazikin, the host's soul is held captive in a place far worse than hell itself. Things begin to look up when Lela finds the Mazikin nest. She is about to destroy it when a familiar face takes on the likeness of a Mazikin: her mother. Strong language and descriptive violence make this title more suitable for older listeners. Amy McFadden returns to voice Lela's plight as she brings down the Mazikin and expertly articulates Malachi's strong European accent. Fine's knowledge of Rhode Island is evident; the geography of the tiny state is imprinted on the listener.
