Booklist Review

With tongue firmly planted in cheek, Murphy pays tribute to a pair of the South's favorite foods: bourbon and bacon. Outlining the process of distilling bourbon whiskey from corn, rye, and wheat, he inventories the region's many whiskeys, whose numbers continue to grow as boutique distilleries encroach on the markets of such established liquors as Jim Beam, George Dickel, and Wild Turkey. From a host of bars around the South come recipes for all sorts of classic cocktails from New Orleans' famous sazerac to Kentucky's mint julep. Many of the new cocktails call for trademarked bitters to generate unique flavor profiles. Some innovative cocktails call for infusing smoke into the glass before serving. The balance of the book takes up the cause of bacon, featuring it in recipes from the iconic BLT to macaroni and cheese to a Thai curry that also features mussels. Regional collections will appreciate Murphy's achievement.--Knoblauch, Mark Copyright 2014 Booklist
