Summary

Summary

Wednesday is a sweet story about two best friends, Little Round and Big Square. But it's also about what it is to really play imaginatively with another. Every Wednesday, our two friends get together to play. Sometimes they have some tough moments, like all true friends, but they mostly have the best time that two friends can ever have together! Illustrated in a strong, two-color graphic style, Wednesday has strong appeal for the youngest readers as well as for parents and teachers.

Anne Bertier has been writing and illustrating children's books since 1995. She studied literature while attending mime courses at the Sylvia Monfort School. Her particular interests in creating art are composition and balance.

Publisher's Weekly Review

Starring a vivid orange circle and a crisp-edged blue square, French artist Bertier's meditation on geometrical shapes has a timeless feel. The book's design and printing, in pure hues on creamy matte pages, make it a pleasing object in and of itself. Little Round and Big Square meet every Wednesday to play. "Butterfly!" cries Big Square, dividing itself into two triangles to create a bowtie-like insect. "I'm a butterfly, too!" cries Little Round, showing off its own semicircular "wings." After a minor disagreement ("You're showing off. I'm not playing anymore"), the two discover that the game is even better when they cooperate: "We're a hat, a boat, a bowl! This is so great!" Whether the square is contributing sections of itself for a boat's sail or the handles of a bowl, the contrast between orange and blue makes every page pop. Cheery, upbeat writing and pared-down subject matter make it a fine choice for a younger audience, who will enjoy picking out the forms in each spread-and then, perhaps, experimenting on their own with paper and scissors. School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2-Bertier artfully employs simple geometric shapes to explore the ups and downs of friendship. Little Round (orange) and Big Square (blue) play together each Wednesday. At first they transform themselves into variations of a theme such as butterfly or flower. Soon, however, Big Square starts showing off by creating complex patterns that Little Round can't produce. After a brief time apart, they decide they can cooperate to create patterns that offer even more surprises and fun. Together they create animals, people, ice-cream treats, and strange designs. Bertier's ability to combine various shapes with simple text to convey emotions will resonate with young listeners who have experienced similar situations with playmates. The orange and blue patterns on cream backgrounds will please viewers and likely encourage some exploratory art using cut-paper shapes. This well-designed and thoughtful book should find a home in most collections.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University Library, Mankato (c) Copyright 2014.
