Summary:
The story of a group of workers and a local priest in the Rome of 1943-44, declared an "open city" by the Nazis, who were ruling it with ruthless tyranny. Underground leader, Manfredi, seeks refuge from the Gestapo in the home of Francesco and is received by Pina, Francesco's pregnant girlfriend whom he is planning to marry. Because Manfredi is wanted by the Gestapo, he gets Father Don Pietro to deliver some money to the underground. The Gestapo raid the apartment block, Francesco is arrested and, as Pina rushes after him, she is shot. Francesco escapes and rejoins Manfredi, who is hiding in the apartment of his mistress, Marina, an actress who has turned to prostitution and has become a drug addict. Unknown to Manfredi, her supplier is a Gestapo woman agent. She betrays Manfredi, who is arrested with Don Pietro. Manfredi dies under torture, refusing to betray the resistance movement, and Don Pietro is shot.
