Summary

Summary

The familiars Aldwyn the cat, Skyler the blue jay, and Gilbert the tree frog are off on an all-new adventure in the series that Michael Buckley, bestselling author of The Sisters Grimm and NERDS series, says "combines the magic of Harry Potter and the adventure of Warriors." With inventive magic, laugh-out-loud humor, and a mysterious conspiracy that will take all the familiars' wits to unravel, Palace of Dreams is the familiars' most extraordinary adventure yet.

Peace has returned to the queendom of Vastia. Paksahara has been defeated, and the three familiars Aldwyn, Skyler, and Gilbert are the heroes to thank. But when a birthday celebration at the palace goes dreadfully wrong, and Queen Loranella falls victim to a curse, it seems the familiars are the prime suspects. After narrowly escaping the palace dungeons, they'll have to embark on a quest to clear their names--a quest that will lead them across Vastia and even into the magical land of dreams.

Booklist Review

After rescuing Vastia from an undead animal army, familiars Aldwyn, Skylar, and Gilbert are heroes of the realm . . . for about two seconds, at which point Queen Loranella is poisoned at her birthday party. Swiftly blamed and incarcerated, the three magical animals escape and embark on a quest to find the recipe (and ingredients) for the magical antidote. The prolonged, circuitous scavenger hunt takes them, ultimately, to the Dreamworld, where their success is never in doubt. This volume doesn't much advance the story or characters, aside from a cliff-hanger involving Aldwyn's search for his sister, but series fans will enjoy the customary mix of fantasy, action, and humor.--Hutley, Krista Copyright 2014 Booklist

School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-7-Their reputation as heroes is short-lived for the Prophesized Three-cat Aldwyn, blue jay Skylar, and tree frog Gilbert-when they are suspected of poisoning Queen Loranella and promptly sent to the dungeon. After a daring escape, the familiars quickly go from being Vastia's most celebrated to its most wanted. Intent on clearing their names and saving Loranella's life, the three embark on an adventuresome journey to find a magical spell before it's too late. Not knowing who framed them or why, the friends travel great distances in disguise, encountering magical creatures and tricky obstacles along the way. Meanwhile, the queen is stuck in the Wander, between this life and the Tomorrowlife. The trio must enter the Dreamworld and hope to emerge alive with the lifesaving spell. Fans of the series will enjoy this installment that ends in a cliffhanger. As a movie is rumored to be in development, fantasy fans will want to get up to date on the plight of Aldwyn, Skylar, and Gilbert before its release.-Michele Shaw, Quail Run Elementary School, San Ramon, CA (c) Copyright 2013.
