Summary:
Elia Suleiman wields the camera with the austerity of a Bresson in this experimental meditation on the psychological effect of political instability on the Palestinian people. A series of vignette / tableaux resolve into no conventional storyline, instead creating a compelling portrait of marginalization and inaction. As a Palestinian Arab back in Jerusalem after twelve years of film study and residence in New York, Suleiman is overwhelmed--albeit in a highly personal way--with a sense of irony and powerlessness captured in these miniature portraits of daily life. The "disappearance" the film chronicles is Suleiman's because his Palestinian identity makes him a non-person in Israel.
