Summary:

Police corruption and municipal politics are central to this story, but there is also Lacey's pain at having to once again revisit the troubling relationship with her father, now that he is virtually homeless and unable to care for himself. Newly divorced Cagney, back on the wagon after a short-lived slip, allows her ambition for promotion to supersede her judgment and, in the process, nearly loses her now-most primary relationship: the one she has shared for years with former partner Mary Beth Lacey.
