Summary:

Dell decides to leave the brother who torments her, an aunt who berates her and her drunken father to go to the City of Cannibals. She hopes the Brown Boy, Ronaldo, who is becoming a Benedictine monk will help her. But when John the Joiner asks Dell whether she's signed the Oath of Allegiance to the king, both Dell and Ronaldo have a good reason not to sign the Oath, even though it means death not to sign.
