Summary

Summary

In book two of this fiction series based on the best-selling non-fiction book The Four Seasons of Marriage, readers meet the blended family of Derek and Kim Finley. Kim has a set of twins-one boy and one girl-from her first marriage; Luke has recently been diagnosed with diabetes, and Lydia is acting out as a result of the attention now being showered on Luke. To complicate matters, Derek's overbearing mother comes to live with them. With all that's going on in their lives, Kim and Derek's communication begins to break down and their marriage slowly moves into winter. Although the second book will focus on Kim and Derek, readers will also encounter all their favorite characters-Patsy Pringle, Pete Roberts, Steve and Brenda, Esther and Charlie-as well as some new ones, like the proprietor of the new sandwich shop that's moved in next to Patsy's beauty parlor.

Library Journal Review

Chapman (coauthor, The Five Languages of Apology) reunites with Christy Award winner Palmer (The Bachelor's Bargain) in the second volume of the "Four Seasons" series (after It Happens Every Spring). Following her marriage to an abusive first husband, Kim Finley thinks she has found the perfect spouse in boat officer Derek Finley. Kim's son from her prior marriage has leukemia, and her daughter acts too old for her age, but it isn't until her mother-in-law moves in that Kim reaches the breaking point. Familiar series faces return, including quirky beautician Patsy Pringle. Though the outcome is fairly predictable, the authors try to make a point about marriage while providing an entertaining story. Their comfortable, breezy writing style makes this a good choice for a lazy summer afternoon; recommended for public libraries. Chapman is the host of the national radio show A Growing Marriage and lives in North Carolina, while Palmer makes her home in Missouri. (c) Copyright 2010.
