Ages 4-7. Buffy is a friendly and intelligent dog who, because he is more interested in listening than in looking or sniffing, is chosen for training at the Red Acre Farm Hearing Dog Center. Color-pencil art realistically depicts Buffy's special education at the farm and demonstrates the acquired skills that have made him a valued member of the Johnson family. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are deaf, and Buffy alerts them to the ring of the telephone, alarm clock, and doorbell; the cry of their baby; and the beep of the smoke detector. Sensitizing youngsters to deaf people's needs and the role a hearing dog can play in their lives, this simply told, appealing story leads to worthwhile awareness. -- Ellen Mandel
