School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-10 --Aaseng's thesis is that it is not necessarily the inventor of an item, but the person who markets the most improved version of it who gets the most customers. Eight success stories detail the evolution of products from heavy machinery to Tupperware, from elevators to razors. These product improvements, like their original inventions, came about because someone recognized their need and had the creative mind to design them. These individuals persevered until their improvement was a success while others failed. Each story is a piece of Americana, illustrated with black-and-white photographs and patent drawings, which, for the most part, depict the product and its designer, and occasionally how the product works. This is a book for aspiring inventors and can serve as a supplement to American history collections. Young people who feel that everything has been invented will learn that there is a need for their creativity. --Margaret M. Hagel, Norfolk Public Library System, VA (c) Copyright 2010.
