School Library Journal Review

PreS-KCluck Cluck opens in medias res, as it were, with a pair of boots and a dog discovering an empty chicken run. The chickens are found in the cabbage patch and herded back by the dog, despite the interference of a fox. The occupant of the boots is never seen, as the tale is told entirely below knee level. This point of view lends excitement to an otherwise bald storyonly four sentences, and one of them incomplete at that. It is the illustrations that save this book from becoming just another dumb cluck chicken story. Watercolors and line are used to maximum effect, especially the fulsome chickens. There is plenty of humor in the fox and drollness as his tail almost looks like a chicken in the cabbages. The vacuous countenance of the chickens is captured to perfection, and the endpapers are a delight. Preschoolers will love the oblivious antics of the chickens and the confrontation between the dog and fox. John Philbrook, San Francisco Public Library (c) Copyright 2010.
