Booklist Review

Gr. 5-7. This year's observance of the bicentennial of the Constitution has awakened an interest in that period, and these plays and programs provide some material for short dramatic productions, classroom participatory efforts, and choral reading. Each dramatic vignette, loosely based on actual events, features well-known personages such as George Washington, Paul Revere, Benjamin Franklin, Peter Zenger, and Molly Pitcher, along with an assortment of invented characters, many of whom are female, providing a welcome opportunity for girls' participation. There is much declaiming of the importance of liberty and freedom, and a great many contemporary famous quotations are brought in (not always gracefully), but the action is good, humor is evident, and there is an attempt to humanize the revered figures even George Washington's mind can be changed when Martha exerts her charms, it seems. Production notes and the text of the Constitution are appended. Recommended where needed. ML. 812'.041 U.S. History Revolution, 1775-1783 Drama / Patriotism Drama / Plays Collections [CIP] 87-15413
