Anne Anastasi is an American psychologist who has achieved a worldwide reputation as an authority on psychological testing, especially the evaluation and interpretation of intelligence testing, culture-free testing, and the methodological problems of test development. She is noted for her proposed resolution of the long-standing nature-nurture controversy in psychology, stating that they are mutually influencing interactions. She has advanced the development of psychology as a quantitative behavioral science and made highly significant contributions to knowledge about psychological traits and the experiential and environmental influences on development.

Anastasi's book Psychological Testing was published in 1954. The fourth edition of the book appeared in 1976. In 1972 Anastasi became the third woman to be elected president of the American Psychological Association. She was honored with the organization's Gold Medal Award in 1984. President Ronald Reagan presented her with the National Medal of Science in 1987 in recognition of her numerous scientific achievements.

(Bowker Author Biography) Anne Anastasi, December 19, 1908 - May 4, 2001 Anne Anastasi was born on December 19, 1908 in Manhattan, New York. Her father died when she was only a year old and her mother raised her and home schooled her till the age of nine. Anastasi's mother was the office manager at Il Progresso, the Italian newspaper. Anastasi had a great interest in mathematics and taught herself spherical trigonometry while;e still a teenager. She spent two years at Rhodes Prepatory School in Manhattan before being accepted to Barnard College at the age of 15. There, Anastasi majored in psychology and received her bachelor's degree in 1928. Two years later she received her doctorate in psychology from Columbia University.

After college, Anastasi was hired as an instructor of psychology at Barnard where she taught until 1939, when she attained the position of chairwoman of the psychology department at Queens College of the City of New York. In 1947, Anastasi transferred to Fordham University and was made a full professor in 1951. In 1954, she penned the work"Psychological Testing", which is considered a veritable bible in the world of psychology and is a required text for most psychology courses. It has produced seven reprints, is printed in nine languages and essentially states that tests cannot be created to be completely unbiased. Anastasi is also known for her studies of individual and group differences and how biology and environment can shape personality and intellect.

Anastasi has written more than 150 books, monographs and articles. In 1972, she became the third woman to be elected president of the American Psychological Association. She also received the American Psychological Foundation's gold medal for lifetime achievement in 1984. In 1987, then President Reagan presented Anastsasi with a National Medal of Science, the nation's highest honor for scientific achievement.

Anne Anastasi died on May 4, 2001 at her home in Manhattan at the age of 92.
