Booklist Review

Librarians will rejoice that Hugh Johnson has brought out a revision of his comprehensive Modern Encyclopedia of Wine, the new edition featuring updated tables of growers and lengthy but incisive descriptions of their vinous produce. Johnson rarely indulges in judgmental opinion except in the odd cases where the gap between a wine and its price seems too disparate. California wines get equal, respectful treatment with the European classics, an especially relevant consideration in the American marketplace. Index. Those familiar with Johnson's World Atlas of Wine will recognize its maps and graphic devices in Johnson and Hubrecht Duijker's Wine Atlas of France. The French entries from the World Atlas combine with restaurant, hotel, and sight-seeing suggestions particularly designed to meet the needs of the oenophile on tour in the world center of sensual enjoyment and indulgence.
