Library Journal Review

Gittleman formerly worked at the Pritikin Longevity Center. Her book features a New Nutrition Diet and expounds the theory of essential fatty acids. Although Pritikin's plan was based on exclusion of fat, recent research points out the need for certain fats, principally Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Gittleman explains what these fats are and why they are important; the diet and recipes round out her argument. This book should be popular because of its relationship to the original Pritikin plan and the current interest in Omega 3 fish oils. Soltanoff is a writer on natural health. His naturopathy book calls on diet, exercise, and a special form of dry skin brushing (related to acupressure) to promote health and well-being. He claims that every cell, tissue, organ, and body system can be revitalized by following his Biochemical Reprogramming plan. Stressing nutrition that cleanses, detoxifies, and heals the body, Soltanoff includes three diets: the Long Life, to de-stress the digestive and metabolic systems; the Supreme, bringing the dieter back to good health; and the Weight-Loss, advising consumption of only celery and grapefruit on certain days to take off excess pounds (an example of the book's nonmainstream medical advice). Leave this one for the individual to purchase. Carol Spielman Lezak, General Learning Corp., Northbrook, Ill. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
