Choice Review

Author of five books and numerous articles, management consultant, and academic, Brief collaborates with writer Tomlinson to produce a concise handbook of techniques for implementing key management concepts. Three focus words (require, review, and reward) with a fourth (respect) define a framework for the how and why of successful management practices. Individual chapters detail the process of setting performance standards, appraising and appraisal systems, and developing reward systems. The volume also includes discussions of managing the hiring process, providing effective training, involving employees in decision making, and career management and employee self-development. Each chapter is summarized with a ``Ten Points to Remember'' section. The book contains a selective reference list of classic and recommended texts. Not as readable as Kenneth H. Blanchard's The One Minute Manager (1982), but useful as quick reference and for business students and new managers.-N.L. Neumann, University of Connecticut Health Center
