Choice Review

This World Bank publication was prepared to evaluate the success of loans made to developing countries to finance implementation of nutrition projects. Through a review and analysis of collaborative efforts for such projects, the author hoped to summarize the achievements, failures, and lessons learned. Four large nutrition projects started between 1977 and 1980 in Brazil, Colombia, India, and Indonesia are described. Their cost, affordability, and cost-effectiveness are compared and discussed. Bank-supported nutrition components in 57 other countries and 75 reports of nutrition-related research are also reviewed. Lessons from the World Bank experience are discussed and recommendations are proposed. Berg, a senior nutrition adviser at the World Bank, acknowledges the contributions of many persons involved in the writing of the book including the Bank's and projects' staff in many countries. Tabulated comparison and cost data are helpful. Upper-division and graduate students.-N.S. Springer, University of Michigan
