Booklist Review

Gr. 3-6. These four new titles in the Living Here series continue to present voices from a cross section of each nation's populace. While hard facts on topics such as government, industry, population, education, and climate can be gleaned from a section at the back of each book, the heart of the individual presentations is the array of voices speaking through the pages. They range from schoolchildren to laborers, craftsmen, young and old professionals, military personnel, farmers, small business operators, and occasionally a politician or two. The narratives allow each nation's culture, customs, and social conditions to emerge naturally. In Egypt, for example, a 63-year-old midwife discusses her life's work; a wealthy Bedouin describes his business, his several homes, and his two wives; and a 42-year-old woman tells about her chain of shops dedicated to preserving traditional Egyptian arts and crafts. Illustrated with full-color photographs, these are engaging sources for those perennial student reports. DMW.
