Booklist Review

The first ``Sylvia'' collection since the tenth-anniversary anthology, The Whole Enchilada (Booklist 83:539 D 1 86), finds ace feminist cartoonist Hollander at the top of her form. In these devastatingly droll strips, her chain-smoking heroine is mostly at home and typewriter, instead of trading quips with Harry the bartender. She still talks back to the TV and finds the weirdest ``self-help'' quizzes in the newspapers, and her refrigerator door still spawns the feyest messages (e.g., ``Door opens when street lights go on'') while her cat does the best comic reactions this side of Oliver Hardy. But here also are such Hollander creations as ``Lives of Susan,'' a comedy miniseries about a woman with a three-way split personality; ``Alien Love,'' the romance of a midwestern woman and an extraterrestrial with multiple eyes, nostrils, and mouths and some kind of tuber growing on his pate; ``The Devil Talks about Hell''; and maybe best of all, ``Insulting Superheroes'' Nutrition Cop, Exercise Cop, et al., who nag Jane and John Doe to get a microwave, buy a house (``Rent?! . . . You disgust me''), work out, etc. RO. 741.5'973 American wit and humor, Pictorial [CIP] 87-40100
