An interesting collection of essays examining a variety of theoretical and empirical approaches that address the influence of assuming multiple roles as a contemporary American adult. Spouse, Parent, Worker is special because it begins with the observation that men and women assume multiple roles; the contributors do not prejudge either the reasons or needs for those roles. Although the chapters draw heavily from psychological and sociological resources, they also contain some insightful political analyses. Each chapter is well referenced and the index is quite sufficient. The level of theoretical sophistication of this book makes it appropriate for the advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals interested in a broad-ranging but detailed analysis of an important aspect of contemporary American life.-J.M.
