Choice Review

Although this text, in three editions over 20 years, has added only 12 pages, it has shifted emphasis from music educator innovations to national policies and standards. The new edition has less about Orff, Kodaly, Suzuki, and the Contemporary Music Project, but it includes more recent developments, such as site-based management and alternative, contract, and charter schools. Mark is clearly at his best as a historian (see also Mark and Charles Gary's A History of American Music Education, 1992), charting the influences on music education, and providing thorough and extensive documentation, a rich bibliography, and many well-chosen quotations. Some areas (e.g., the multi-arts focus, transdisciplinary curriculum, and the relationship between music education and current innovations in mathematics, language arts, and science education) are not thoroughly presented. This is not a guide to better teaching, but it may be of value to undergraduate courses that stress the history of music education. Since it presents an overview and leads to original sources, it is an invaluable resource for graduate study in music education. T. T. Tuttle Cleveland State University
