Reviews 1

School Library Journal Review

Gr 1-6-These four episodes from the award-winning television program focus on marine biology and underwater exploration and feature a variety of young male and female hosts. The appealing series succeeds in engaging viewers with its quick pace, humor, and animated breaks, yet it always retains its integrity as an educational resource. From swimming with dolphins to studying sharks to visiting Sea World's animal hospital to staying at an underwater hotel, young viewers can join in on the voyage. The learning adventure continues with mining an iceberg for drinking water, facts about scuba diving, and underwater explorers both mechanical and human. There is even information for starting and maintaining an at-home aquarium. The comical adult host, Charlie, performs experiments that can be easily duplicated at home, such as underwater gliders and a self-contained ecosystem. A strong conservation message will impact young people and possibly inspire them to study marine biology. The DVD includes links to the Popular Mechanics Web site. This title would enhance science collections in school and public libraries.-April R. Mazza, Wayland Free Public Library, MA (c) Copyright 2010.
