School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up-Comprised of five to eight minute vignettes, this series reveal little-known facts and stories about the Confederate States of America and the Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Clad in a Union uniform, Civil War authority Michael Kraus hosts many segments, while others feature a male narrator. These segments are accented by a continuous, appropriate musical soundtrack. Topics are varied and include stories of generals and common soldiers; a consideration of the large number of horses used during the war and the high casualty rate; the tale of grave markers and "Decoration Day" to honor civil War dead; a description of the CSA flag; and close-up examinations of artifacts such as uniforms, knives, guns, belt buckles, buttons, sewing kit, and drums. Recounting the story of the Civil War takes on a new interest when students can see these actual items used by soldiers. These segments are highlights of the series, and students are sure to find them entertaining as well as educational. Classroom teachers can utilize the video to supplement other learning activities.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, IL (c) Copyright 2010.
