Reviews 1

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1-This charming but unremarkable animated collection features the escapades of Angelina, the mouse ballerina (the titular character from Katharine Holabird's well-known series), and her friends. Consisting of four animated episodes and two live-action segments, this ballet-soaked video is an ideal purchase for children already enamored with dance. While the production is of high quality overall, the story lines are clich?d and the characters are stereotypical. Angelina's ballet teacher, Miss Lilly, is a cosmopolitan ex-dancer with a foreign accent; her parents and grandparents are portrayed in traditional roles; and Angelina's best friend, Alice, exhibits the slight spunk most sidekicks commonly possess. The one exception to the stereotypes is William, the primary male ballet dancer in Angelina's class, whose presence may encourage boys interested in ballet and dancing to follow their hoofing dreams. An acceptable purchase for those libraries serving large populations of Angelina-lovers and ballerinas-in-training.-Jennifer Iserman, Dakota County Library-Burnhaven, Burnsville, MN (c) Copyright 2010.
