Library Journal Review

David Copperfield: Illusion presents highlights from several of Copperfield's TV specials and includes some of his most famous illusions, such as making several large objects disappear, including an Orient Express train car, a jet plane, and the Statue of Liberty. He also walks through the Great Wall of China and escapes from a safe in an imploding building. The video shows a number of his more memorable stage acts as well as the incredible flying sequence from his Broadway show Dreams and Nightmares. Copperfield never ceases to amaze, and this video will be thoroughly enjoyed by his many fans. The DVD also contains several special features, including a "Clone-On O'Brien" spoof, a biography, "Copperfacts," and more. In Leave 'Em Speechless, Reid "Magic" Johnson relates how his career as a magician started by performing at birthday parties and has grown to include over 500 shows and more than 2000 tricks. Here he demonstrates nine of them: Cups & Balls, Balloosion, Crayon Clairvoyance, Two on a Match, Things That Cling, Electrostatic Toothpicks, The Amazing Cutting a Woman in Half Trick, Cut & Restore Newspaper, and Houdini Coins. He first performs each trick, then shows the viewer how to do it, using items found around the home or inexpensively purchased. The tricks are very well explained and can be easily learned, even by young children, with just a little practice. This is a great learning tool for beginning magicians and for those who would like to impress their friends at parties. It's definitely a "low-budget" production but succeeds in what it sets out to do. Both videos are recommended for all types of libraries.-Tom Budlong, Atlanta (c) Copyright 2010.
