Reviews 1

School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-4-These tightly written books look at the history of their respective holidays and how Americans celebrate them. The discussions in Memorial Day of how people came to wear red poppies to honor the war dead and of the Tomb of the Unknowns add interest to the presentation. The chapter "The United States at War" concludes with Operation Iraqi Freedom. Presidents' Day elaborates on the lives of Washington and Lincoln, whose February birthdays were once remembered separately. Especially appealing are the stories of Washington's escape unharmed in a battle during the French and Indian War and why Lincoln grew a beard. Appropriate black-and-white and color photographs reflect the diversity of the U.S. and enhance the texts. These up-to-date titles will add depth to holiday collections.-Pamela K.
