Booklist Review

Gr. 4-7. Part of the United States Presidents series, this biography is a solid introduction to the forty-third president. Leading off with the dramatic events of 9/11, the book follows Bush's life chronologically. The well-documented text never really breaks the bounds of its series-book format, but the writing is involving, and Kachurek's coverage is evenhanded, including discussion of Bush's drinking and reported drug use, and the controversy over his stint in the Air National Guard. Very complicated topics such as the 2000 election are handled neatly and concisely. Studding the text are crisply reproduced, black-and-white photos, many of which kids may have already seen. The design looks fresh, and the cover, featuring a headshot of Bush repeated in multiple colors, makes the book seem more appealing. A chronology, a brief bibliography, and lists of Web sites and places to visit are appended. --Ilene Cooper Copyright 2004 Booklist
