Reviews 1

School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-5-Graves discusses the circumstances leading up to the Revolutionary War, the difficulties surrounding the framing of the Declaration of Independence, and the words forming its basic principles. A spread displays the document in its entirety. Beginning with the most recent controversy about the oath, Sonneborn introduces the Pledge of Allegiance, which was first recited by students across the country on Columbus Day, 1892. Changes to and the meaning of the language in it are also examined. Color and black-and-white photographs and reproductions extend the thoughtful and carefully written texts, and captions add insightful information. Both books support national and state educational standards. Each one includes suggestions of key words for Internet searches. Useful and engaging offerings.-Pamela K.
