Booklist Review

Four years of bloodshed is enough for Ciaran Tamberlane. Even though he had pledged his life to serve God and the Knights Templar, he can't take the slaughter of innocents any longer, so he leaves the Holy Land and the Templars, disgraced, excommunicated, and branded a traitor. While in exile in England, Ciaran stumbles across a massacre of an innocent village in which only one woman is found alive. Ciaran brings her to his castle, where his seneschal, Marak, a gifted healer, manages to save her. But Amaranth de Langois would have preferred death, since her brutal husband, Odo de Langois, has sworn to find and severely punish his disobedient wife. Now to get to Amie, Odo must first cross Ciaran, who discovers that there are some people for whom it is still worth fighting. Canham's beautifully crafted historical features a brutal but fascinating medieval setting, a plot that deftly explores the idea of faith and honor, and superbly nuanced characters. --John Charles Copyright 2004 Booklist
