Reviews 1

Library Journal Review

A home's flooring is frequently an afterthought, but since it is one of the most visible and heavily used surfaces, the proper material is critical. Jeffries, who has more than 40 years' experience in the flooring industry, helps readers determine what kind of flooring will best meet their needs and then explains how to install the most commonly used flooring materials, including ceramic, vinyl, wood, and carpet-as well as more unusual materials like cork or leather. A great deal of attention is given to preinstallation preparation and the appropriate subflooring, topics that are critical for success. Numerous color illustrations and photographs show the various techniques and the effects of each flooring material on a room's overall decor. Libraries on tight budgets that already own William P. Spence's Installing & Finishing Flooring can safely pass on this title, but most should consider it. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Introduction to Chapter 1: Getting Started You may already have in mind the "look" you want for your home, but don't rush out to buy a new floor straightaway. The key to installing a floor yourself is thorough preparation. This section will help you assess your site and choose a flooring that suits the location -- as well as your tastes, budget and level of expertise. For inspiration, and more information about your chosen floor, turn to the relevant flooring section later in the book. There are hundreds of photographs of fabulous floors, grouped into "hard," resilient," "wood" and "soft," to enable you to compare similar options. Find out more about durability, maintenance and design possibilities, and check out the skills required by looking at the step-by-step installation instructions. Then return to this section for essential information about preparing the site: leveling the subfloor, waterproofing, trimming doors, planning the layout and much more.
