Choice Review

Goodwin's most recent offering on mosaic art (she is author of Classic Mosaic, 2000; Decorative Mosaics, 1992; Technique of Mosaic, with Arthur Goodwin, 1985) provides a ready reference source and a source of inspiration for mosaic artists and hobbyists. It covers a wide range of topics, including terminology, tools and equipment, techniques, materials, and architectural and art historical mosaics. Entries are arranged alphabetically; the longest run about 30 lines. Where historical and contemporary meanings differ, both are explained. The book takes readers through the entire process of mosaic art, beginning to end, including techniques of design, design elements and layout; choosing appropriate materials; and cutting and bonding tesserae. Many of the 115 high-quality color illustrations show the author's own completed or in-progress work and provide examples of entries. Diagrams and line drawings supplement the illustrations, and a list of suppliers and a bibliography are included. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Art, larger academic, and larger public libraries. N.
