Summary

Summary

"From ancient battlefields to the modern business landscape, competitors have tried innumerable approaches to conquering adversaries. Success for the victors has taken many forms and traveled many paths, but at its heart, winning strategy can be boiled down to ten universal principles. When learned and implemented, these principals become powerful drivers of business excellence. Renowned strategy expert William A. Cohen, whose considerable experience in the military, corporate, and academic sectors forms the basis for The Art of the Strategist , presents the timeless lessons of:

* commitment to a definite objective

* seizing and maintaining the initiative

* economization to mass (concentration of resources)

* positioning

* surprise

* multiple simultaneous alternatives

* the indirect approach

* simplicity

* timing

* exploiting success

With examples including the conquests of Hannibal and Alexander the Great, the political triumphs of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the business successes of internet giant VeriSign and other high-profile companies, The Art of the Strategist proves how superior strategy trumps other factors in almost every competitive arena. The ten lessons in turn form a roadmap to decisive victory in business."

Choice Review

From the military conquests of Hannibal in 216 BCE to product prominence and contemporary organizational leadership, Cohen, author and consultant, saliently argues that organizations that achieve excellence somehow have found a common winning strategy. For Cohen, there are ten principles or guidelines of strategic planning that form the essence of every successful decision model. The book's 14 short, well-organized, and easy-to-read chapters are divided into three sections: "The Roots of Strategy," "The 10 Essential Principles," and "Putting the Strategic Principles into Action." The author skillfully uses interesting and eclectic anecdotes and vignettes to chronicle and illustrate the book's lessons. Underlying the simplism of the model is a depth of practical advice and an unlimited usefulness. Even those who do not agree with the author's premise will find the study compelling. The author's Web site, Education, Training, and Motivation for the Practice of Leadership , provides a variety of useful resources for students doing research and complements the text. Although oriented toward the management professional, this book will be of interest to every business major. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. General readers; undergraduate students; and practitioners. S. R. Kahn University of Cincinnati
