Choice Review

Space writer Evans and space historian Harland offer a very readable book telling the story of the exploration of the outer planets. It starts with an excellent, brief history of the legends about and the discovery of the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto). In the 1960s, scientists discovered that we were heading toward a once-in-176-year opportunity to fly by all the planets with a single spacecraft, starting in the mid-1970s. This grand tour was never mounted, but the incredibly successful Voyager mission fulfilled many of its objects. The details of the mission, the data collected, and the information acquired since their fly-bys are all discussed in this book. Each planet is fully discussed in its own chapter. The information is further enriched by more recent studies from the Hubble space telescope, ground-based observations, and other spacecraft missions. There is an excellent bibliography and about six pages of Internet references for those who want further information. A great read for anyone interested in the most current information about the outer planets in a very accessible format. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
