Booklist Review

American explosives expert Navy Chief Brian Skelley is in the Scottish Highlands, on loan to the British military, when one of his trainees finds an unidentified explosive that unexpectedly detonates. When Skelley (whose name translates as Storyteller) regains consciousness, he finds himself in fourteenth-century Scotland, mistaken by two elderly farmers as one of William Wallace's men. Taken to the castle of the Mackenzie laird, he meets Caira, a young widowed healer who just happens to be the laird although the invading English still believe her father is alive. Of course, sparks fly between Caira and Brian, blasting them unwilling into love with each other. When the castle and all under Caira's protection are threatened, Brian dredges up the ingredients for black powder. This light entertainment will appeal to readers who can't get enough of romances set in Scotland featuring a protagonist from the present. --Diana Tixier Herald Copyright 2004 Booklist
