Booklist Review

Louise Summers is a biographer who loves writing serious books about little-known historical figures. Her latest is about Andrew Pax, a Cambridge student who was hanged in 1941 for passing secrets to the Russians. Coincidentally, Louise has just finished ghostwriting an autobiography of film star David Gale, who played Pax in the box-office hit Broken Light. Although Gale seemed on top of the world when Louise worked with him, he killed himself shortly thereafter. Now despite her publisher's interest in keeping Gale's image untarnished by the tragedy, Louise wants to find out why the actor killed himself and whether Pax was really the Communist informer he was made out to be.ames' terse dialogue, abrupt changes of direction, and unexpected twists work well in his Harpur and Iles series but are less successful here, where the unusual plot seems to call for a more linear approach. Still, this story has considerable appeal, for the plot itself as well as for the eccentric characters and bone-dry wit. --Emily Melton Copyright 2004 Booklist
