Library Journal Review

Prize-winning photographer Kumpf (Children of Belfast) has turned a collection of luminescent landscape photographs-supported by his passionate and somewhat fanciful text-into a book that evokes a timeless land with a deep and abiding history. The majority of the photographs are in color, some filling up a page or more of this large-format book. The black-and-white shots have a grainy quality that enhances the mystical quality of the landscape. Although few people appear, their impact is apparent in the moody views of ruined abbeys and remnants of stone circles and tombs. This is an Ireland of former greatness, home to the old ways-a place where the Ancient Kings left their mark and fairies are only just out of sight. The text is heavily laced with references to the ancient history and mythology of Ireland and closely linked to the photographs. This handsome volume will enhance any travel or photography collection.-Linda M. Kaufmann, Massachusetts Coll. of Liberal Arts Lib., North Adams (c) Copyright 2010.
