Reviews 1

School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-4-Geography, history, cultures, and people are covered in these overviews. Large, colorful photographs enrich the readable texts and appear on nearly every page. Each volume includes one or two serviceable maps. The "At a Glance" section of each volume provides facts often asked for by teachers, such as languages spoken, population, capital city, currency, and a picture of the country's flag. Readers must enter a book ID number to get a list of related Web sites, most of which are for an older audience. Glossaries are limited to only seven or eight terms, and events on the time lines are not always included in the texts. In United States, Native Americans receive mention in only four sentences, with no reference to the fact that they were forced from their land. Similarly, in Cuba, the people and history of the island before Columbus's discovery are virtually ignored. These books are more informative than the "True Book" series on countries. Acceptable purchases for report writers who are not yet ready for the higher reading level of the "Enchantment of -" series (both Children's Press).-Melinda Piehler, Sawgrass Elementary School, Sunrise, FL (c) Copyright 2010.
