Reviews 1

School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-4-This fine introduction offers enough essential facts for young readers to gain an understanding of this country's culture. The well-written text covers city and country life, laws and customs, religion, geography, and more. A legend is included. One sidebar lists "Facts about Afghanistan"; others discuss "Birthdays," "The Taliban," and "Afghan Hounds." A full-page map is included. Ann Heinrichs's Afghanistan (Children's, 2003) has more coverage of history, culture, and daily life, and Mary Englar's Afghanistan (Capstone, 2003) has more information in general than either of the other titles. However, the game, craft, and recipe included in Knox's title should appeal to younger children. With its attractive design, color photos, full spreads, large print, and well-spaced text, it is suitable for simple reports.-Augusta R.
