Booklist Review

Gr. 10-12. Rich's thoughtful, thorough, and expansive exploration covers many relevant topics important to male teens who are gay or wondering if they are gay and need information about self-acceptance and fitting in. Repeatedly, Rich reassures readers that they are not alone, no matter what they are feeling. Then he guides them through an exploration of their feelings, considerations for coming out to family and friends, and, briefly ways to reconcile spiritual concerns. More concrete information appears in chapters on the gay social scene, relationships, sex, and cyberspace. Throughout, Rich's tone is reassuring and never judgmental or militant. Instead, he continually invites readers to explore their own thoughts and beliefs by offering varied alternatives to every issue and including comments by gay teens. Although some details, especially in the sex chapter, are specific, they, like all aspects of this fine work, are handled in a non-sensational manner. Contact information about many gay-friendly organizations, help lines, colleges, churches, and Web sites is appended. --Roger Leslie
